Sonnet I: Cat TV
...
In darkness, we observe the screen and wait.
A clip on Youtube called “mice running” plays.
The rodents dart around, unknowing bait.
The display emits a glow, a tempting haze.
Our target hops onto the TV stand,
His body coiled, prepared for swift attack.
His tail twitches, his dark pupils expand–
Transfixed, the bright facade reflected back.
A too-familiar longing lights his eyes,
As I look on, and he paws at the screen
And tries to catch his always absent prize
And looks below for wayward mice, unseen.
Then it becomes as clear as day to me
That I myself am prey to Cat TV.
